It comes from a lineage back to 1899, they begame the model 10 in 1957 and were made in various forms. The 10 dash 6 is known as the heavy barrel variety. The S&W Standard Catalog puts the serials 241704-700000 between 1915 and 1942. Not a lot of help. They weren't made at an even x-number per year, so extrapolating your serial in that range isn't going to be exact. If the production was relatively linear then I'd guess 1928- ish.While using an S&W serial number lookup can be useful in determining the age and history of a Smith & Wesson firearm, it does have its limitations. Hard to tell the exact serial number, depending on how you hold the gun.
