I was thinking there might be a way to supply "emergency" 12V power to the van not to start it but to provide sufficient power to let the gear selector work. With other cars the factory supplied a pop out post -- from the fuse box under the dash -- to which one can clamp a +12V power cable to then the ground is clamped to the door latch catch.
