Welcome Brent! I'm new to both as well. My first Kimber (Micro 9 Raptor) is on lay away for another week, so I can't speak from experience yet. I carry Federal HST 124 hp + p in my S&W M&P 2.0 compact - wow what a round! May be a little too much in the M9 (for quick follow ups). Probably go with non +p HST or Winchester Defend at least initially.
If this is reloaded ammo, it's possible there is too much crimp applied. If this happens the round will seat too far into the chamber whereas the firing pin won't strike the primer hard enough to ignite it. Remember the the 9 mm round headspaces on the case mouth and a too heavy crimp will prevent proper headspacing.
