I know for my 08 FXSTC ( 96 ci as well ), I always put 2.5 qts. in, ride enough for it to warm up, and check it again. And it always ends up being just a little shy of where I like ... After draining the engine oil and replacing the filter, there will be about 1/2oz of oil in the crank case that your not going to get out, and don't really need to get out either. The 3.5oz listed in the manual is the total amount if the engine was bone dry. 3oz will be right on the money.

L84-89 mainshafts have a tapper for the clutch basket and a keyway. 90-up had a splined shaft for the clutch basket. 80-86 had the "diamond" end cover and used a clutch arm. 87-up uses the clutch ramps.1. Have some extra oil bolt gaskets on hand. They're about $0.50 each and when you need one you really need one. 2. Don't overfill the crankcase. The manual may say 4 quarts but don't just blindly dump in 4 quarts. Even with the softails now (changed in 05), your can check it on the kickstand (dipstick was changed).

Manual says ~ 24oz in the primary and I mistakenly poured in the whole quart (32oz).
