Last week, at 7 weeks exactly, my embryo was measuring a week behind, no heartbeat was heard, and my gestational sac was irregular. Although I was told to stay cautiously optimistic because there had been progress since my scan a week earlier, the doctors really weren't saying a lot else to inspire optimism. At my latest ultrasound the technician found the gestational sac and a large yolk sac, both measuring about 7 weeks 4 days, and a fetal pole measuring just about a week behind at roughly 6 weeks 4 days. Unfortunately, the ultrasound technician was unable to detect a heart beat.... There was no visible fetus and no fetal pole/heartbeat. I was still hopeful, as lots of times you can't see the fetus until 8-10 weeks. I had an irregular shaped gestational sac on my first scan for my first pregnancy. Sadly the doctor doing the scan said that they generally associated this with increased chance of miscarriage. The following week I was rescanned and the sac had actually become a regular shape, but there was still no heartbeat/fetal pole, just the sac.
