The wires only need to be shorted for a moment of a second and you cannot make the chime actuate faster.In the steady state condition Nest pulls a small amount of power for it to operate. Without the chime connector (puck) that power draw isn't normally enough to ring the chime but can be enough for it to try which causes humming or buzzing. The puck bypasses the chime in steady state to avoid this.
