This calculation compares a company’s current stock price to its earnings per share. If a company earns $10 billion and has 2 billion shares outstanding, its EPS is $5. If its stock price is $60, the P/E ratio is 60 divided by 5, or 12. This means the stock is trading for 12 times more than the company’s earnings.
