I haven't needed to lock the diff in the 4yrs I owner the Rav4. 🤷 It's really about slow acceleration, driving for the conditions (slower), and keeping enough stopping distance in the snow. Hybrid (or even Eco mode for the gas models) let's you control acceleration better so you don't step on it too fast from a dead stop.
