I have both an XT22 and a 795. The XT likes CCI SV, the 795 is stoopid accurate with 36gr Mini Mags. The 795 also does well with Remington GB's and Federal AM, the XT sprays GB's all over the paper and prints 1" groups with the Feds. Yep, I've got a 989-M2, the 795 mags work quite well in it. If you have ANY issues with a 795 mag in an older Marlin, it's likely the mag needs a little feed lip tuning. Or the magwell/mag release has an issue...also easily resolved. The 989-M2 is basically a 795 with a better stock & rear sight.

BulletBait. You need to really concentrate on spinning a bronze cleaning brush in the chamber to remove firing residue like is seen in the back of the receiver. Several shooters have removed the bolt and sand away the paint inside the receiver. My used 795 functioned perfectly from day one even with the overspray left alone.
