Apr 28, 2009. All it means when the computer shuts off at 75 questions is that the program has received enough input to make a determination as to whether or not you pass. The only reason it goes beyond 75 is if the computer program does not have enough data yet based on your responses. NCLEX is an adaptive response exam.
When the NCLEX-RN shuts off at 85 questions, it means you either did very well or very poorly—enough so that the CAT model is 95% confident in your success or failure after only one-third of the possible 265 exam questions. Further, in an 85-question test only 70 questions are counted toward your passing score. Today I found out I failed the NCLEX in 85 questions, which is actually really embarrassing if you think about it. I wish I had failed in 150 instead. Eventually, the test shut off at 85 questions and I was convinced that I failed again. I felt like the whole thing flew by so fast - it only took me just about an hour. everyone studies differently. Since you failed, you should be receiving a breakdown of what you need to work on. You should use that as a guide. For me, I did at least 85 questions a day on Bootcamp for a month and then I used Archer. I took the NCLEX on a Saturday, so I didn't find out until Monday at like noon. I was so nervous I thought it could go both ways. I Passed with 85 questions.
