I have tried holding down the "Aim" button (LCTRL) then the Melee button (SPACE) and he gets all threateningly posed with the weapon, but then gently shoves the zombie away. I have also tried the right-click, then left-click method, and this just results in absolutely nothing. I have tried aiming and running at the zombie.

The Machete is a lightweight weapon that can cut through hordes of zombies with no difficulty, being one of the best Project Zomboid melee weapons.
