It appears to have been refinished but not by S&W at some point. A good cleaning and treatment for any rusting and it should make a good shooter. The serial is also stamped on the breech face of the cylinder and under the barrel on the extractor rod flat. If all those serials match, it is in its original configuration. These guns are fun to shoot if you can find .38 Special ammo anywhere. It'll eat any pressure commercial ammo available out there so find some and take it to the range.
