The best weapon is the one you enjoy using. The mace is not a bad strength weapon. Can't go wrong with a Longsword. It's one of the most versatile weapons for both pve and pvp (top tier in pvp), and after beating the game with nothing but the LS, imo if I had to pick just one weapon, it would be the Longsword, no contest.

The Zweihander and it's angrier brother the Drakekeeper UGS are some of the finest big weapons in the game. Both have the same awesome wide-sweep moveset. Ivory King Ultragreatsword is great for pve. Downside is that its durability wears off as if your hitting with a cheesecake so you'll need a bracing knuckle ring.

The regular "Great Sword" is good for mob clearing since it swipes horizontally when one handed. Two handed will swipe vertically which may be useful against certain enemies. The Red Rust Sword, which can be acquired at the same time as the shield, is also a very good strength weapon. The Craftsman's Hammer, another Bastille item, is a good choice of hammer, but not the best. The Mace is better.
